The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman said he has already spoken to vice president of football operations Mark Hatley about signing a replacement for S LeRoy Butler (shoulder), who may be out for the rest of the season. Among the free-agent safeties the team may be interested in looking at are Mark Carrier, Billy Jenkins, Marty Carter, Mike Dumas, Henry Jones and Greg Jeffries. Jenkins is probably the best athlete of the bunch, although he is more of a run-supporting strong safety than a free safety.

The team wants to give starting SS Henry Jones rest when they go to their nickel package. As an update to last night's story, the Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings S Henry Jones took the majority of snaps with the first team at strong safety during the open portion of practice Friday. He almost certainly will play during Sunday's game, but DBs coach Willie Shaw stopped short of saying Jones would start. "We've got him working with the first team because he hasn't been here for two months," Shaw said.

Jones, a surprise final cut by the Bills, was scheduled to be in town Monday night. A deal could be made with the 10-year veteran as early as today. The team probably envisions Jones as the eventual starter until Griffith returns.

GM Randy Mueller talked with Jones' agent Jim Steiner on Monday about trying to arrange a visit sometime this week, said Ben Dogra, a partner in Steiner's St. Louis-based office. Two other, undisclosed teams have expressed interest in Jones, Dogra said.

The Democrat and Chronicle reports Raion Hill is now expected to take over at strong safety for the released Henry Jones. Hill has played well in the pre-season, and his hard-hitting tackling style clearly impressed coach Gregg Williams. In the team's new defensive system, defensive backs are going to be left alone often to make plays and Jones missed a tackle in the pre-season against Cincinnati which allowed RB Brandon Bennett to score a TD on a 76-yard run. "We've got a certain style of defense that we are trying to implement here and it requires a strong safety to play a little differently than maybe the previous defense required the strong safety to play," said GM Tom Donahoe.

Leo Roth reports in the Democrat and Chronicle the Buffalo Bills continue to make changes to meet the salary cap requirements. In addition to NT Ted Washington, the team may also release LB Sam Rogers, OG Joe Panos, RB Antowain Smith and DE Phil Hansen. Hansen may stay if he finally decides to accept a $1 million pay cut. The Bills are working to restructure the contracts of S Henry Jones and OC Jerry Ostroski, to free up another $2 million. The team will soon make a decision on which QB to keep, Doug Flutie or Rob Johnson. The quarterbacks each met with GM Tom Donahoe, coach Gregg Williams, offensive coordinator Mike Sheppard and quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe. Donahoe told radio station WNSA he was pleased with both meetings. The Bills staff is now off to the NFL Scouting Combine.
