Packers.com reports Green Bay Packers WR Robert Ferguson (ankle) was back on the practice field Friday, just a day after rolling his ankle in practice. Ferguson is also expected to be the team's punt returner this weekend following Darrien Gordon's release earlier in the week.

TE Reggie Kelly (shoulder), DT Shane Dronett (knee) and OT Ephraim Salaam (knee/ankle) are all doubtful. The team will likely list DL Brady Smith (back spasms) as doubtful too if he's not able to do well in practice Wednesday. CB/KR Darrien Gordon (ankle) is also questionable.

AtlantaFalcons.com reports Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Reeves said OL Todd McClure (foot) is the most serious injury the team suffered on Sunday. He's out this week and may need surgery. He'll undergo an MRI on it. OL Ephraim Salaam (knee/ankle) will likely undergo some tests, too. DT Shane Dronett (hyperextended knee) is questionable and will have some tests done, too. The team thinks DL Travis Hall (hip flexor) and CB/KR Darrien Gordon (ankle) will be okay this week. The team will wait until Wednesday before seeing how TE Reggie Kelly (shoulder) is doing.

NY Newsday reports the New York Jets, having bypassed signing PR Darrien Gordon, will use Aaron Glenn as the deep man on punt returns and Laveranues Coles the second returner. The Jets never made an offer to Gordon, who got a one-year deal for $477,000. They are seeking less expensive alternatives.

The Associated Press' Ken Berger reports having moved on from CB/PR Darrien Gordon, the New York Jets auditioned two more punt returners today. Former Jet Leon Johnson and free agent Winslow Oliver were in for looks. Johnson is not considered a serious candidate. The Jets have not ruled out a trade and as previously reported, Glyn Milburn of the Bears remains a possibility.

Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com, barring last-minute hang-ups in negotiations, the Atlanta Falcons are expected to sign free agent CB/PR Darrien Gordon on Wednesday. They hope he can breathe life into a punt return game that has struggled during two pre-season games, and clearly misses the departed Tim Dwight. The two sides on Tuesday reached agreement in principle on most elements of a deal, but still must fine-tune some components of what is expected to be a one-year contract.

The NY Daily News reports the New York Jets are now apparently waivering with their interest in free agent CB/PR Darrien Gordon. The Jets spoke yesterday with Gordon's agent, but as of last night, they seemed to be backing off, willing to let him go to the Falcons. The team may be willing to wait another week to make a move.

The Associated Press reports after reviewing the game films from last night's loss, New York Jets coach Herman Edwards has apparently decided the team needs to pursue a new punt return man. On Sunday he strongly hinted that the Jets might sign veteran returner Darrien Gordon. "We're all leaning toward bringing someone in," Edwards said. "The best guy is Gordon, and we had a good visit with him (last week). We've got to get a guy back there that's really confident catching the ball."

Randy Lange reports for the Bergen Record the New York Jets, as expected, worked out CB/PR Darrien Gordon earlier today. Free agent David Palmer stopped by the Jets complex also, but he was only visiting. Palmer was still shaken after attending the Monday funeral for Korey Stringer, but he may work out at a future date. GM Terry Bradway said not to expect anyone to be signed for a while.

Rich Cimini reports for the NY Daily News now that the New York Jets have confirmed WR/PR Santana Moss will be out 8-12 weeks, probably closer to 12, they are still looking for a replacement as a punt returner. CB Aaron Glenn becomes the Jets top returner - for now. WRs Wayne Chrebet and Laveranues Coles also have been fielding punts in practice. The Jets will intensify their search for a punt returner. More than likely they won't add a player until after the pre-season opener Saturday. They remain interested in former Raiders CB Darrien Gordon and they will audition several more free agents. One name to keep in mind if he is released later - Glyn Milburn.

NY Newsday reports the injury to New York Jets WR/PR Santana Moss leaves the team seeking help at punt returner. Jets coach Herman Edwards said WR Wayne Chrebet and CB Aaron Glenn might be given action at the position. Another possibility is signing free agent Darrien Gordon, a veteran defensive back and accomplished return man who spent the last two seasons with the Raiders.

As an update to a previous story, the Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins held their scheduled workouts with free agent RB Ki-Jana Carter, DEs Michael Bankston and Dorian Boose and CB/PR Darrien Gordon earlier today. At this point it appears Carter and Bankston are the two players most likely to be offered contracts.

According to the Washington Post, Washington Redskins CBs Darrell Green and Champ Bailey may be the leading candidates to return punts for the team, Coach Marty Schottenheimer said yesterday. Bailey may be too valuable on defense to risk using him in other capacities. The team may also sign free agent CB/PR Darrien Gordon, who as reported previously, works out for the team tomorrow. The coach also listed rookie RB Stanley Stephens and wide WRs Kevin Lockett and Winston October as candidates for punt returner. Michael Bates is expected to return kicks for the team.

Len Pasquarelli of SportsLine.com the Oakland Raiders have signed RB/WR/KR Eric Metcalf to a one-year, $484,000 contract. It gives Metcalf the opportunity to resume his career after a one-year hiatus and gives Oakland leverage in anticipated contract talks with several players. The Raiders have not yet announced his signing. Metcalf gives the Raiders insurance in the return game. The team's primary kickoff returner from 2000, David Dunn, is eligible for unrestricted free agency next month and Oakland definitely wants him back. PR/CB Darrien Gordon must restructure his deal to stay with the Raiders.

The Contra Costa Times reports Oakland Raiders RB Napoleon Kaufman (right knee), DE Regan Upshaw (ankle) and CB/PR Darrien Gordon (toe) all missed practice on Wednesday. Kaufman looks doubtful for Sunday, while Upshaw and Gordon are both expected to play. WR David Dunn (left ankle) and FB Jon Ritchie (left ankle) returned to practice and both are expected to play Sunday. Zack Crockett will start at fullback, coach Jon Gruden said.

DT Grady Jackson (right shoulder), CB Darrien Gordon (turf toe) and RB Randy Jordan (turf toe) also missed practice. S Eric Johnson (shoulder) practiced but head coach Jon Gruden stated Johnson is still very sore. Gruden said RB Terry Kirby is likely to be active for the first time.

The Contra Costa Times reports RB Randy Jordan (turf toe), CB Darrien Gordon (turf toe), DT Grady Jackson (bruised shoulder) and S Eric Johnson (bruised shoulder) did not practice Tuesday. CB Eric Allen (general soreness) practiced in a limited capacity. All are expected to be healthy enough to play Saturday. Results from MRI tests taken on Jackson and Johnson were negative.

The Oakland Tribune reports the CB Darrien Gordon has a 3-year, $10 million deal including a $500,000 signing bonus with the Oakland Raiders. He will make only $500,000 base salary in 1999. He also has the ability to earn more than $1 million in incentives. According to his agent, Jordan Woy, Gordon is able to become a free agent after the first-year of the deal.

As a follow-up to an earlier story, Raiders.com reports that the Raiders have signed CB Darrien Gordon. "It feels great," said Gordon, who has played under Raiders Defensive Coordinator Willie Shaw at both Stanford and with San Diego. "I hoped at some point in my career I would be playing for the Raiders and I'm glad that it's now." The contract is for three-years, $9 million, with a buyout option after one year, in which case the contract would be for $1.2 million.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that the Raiders may be close to signing Free Agent CB Darrien Gordon. He met with the team on Monday and a deal could be reached as early as today. Speculation remains that the Raiders may still be looking to release Desmond Howard and the signing of Gordon, who can also return punts, may make that move possible.
