NFL | Sanders did not want to be a leader
Thu, 19 Jun 2008 09:02:25 -0700

The Detroit News reports former NFL head coach Bobby Ross said that former NFL RB Barry Sanders never wanted to be a leader when he played for the Detroit Lions. "I don't know if Barry really loved the game, but he worked hard at it," Ross said. "He did what he was supposed to do. I always wanted him to be a leader, but he didn't really want that role."

Giants | Barber discusses retirement issue
Thu, 19 Oct 2006 11:07:42 -0700

Citing a discussion with former Detroit Lions RB Barry Sanders, New York Giants RB Tiki Barber explained why he has considered retiring from the NFL in recent years. "He (Sanders) said at some point, you just lose your passion for it," Barber said. "You get beat up enough times, you realize it's a young man's game and you want to do something else. I'm sure all of that plays in, but like I said, I have a lot of interests and I've never wanted to be solely defined as a football player. I wasn't that way in high school, I wasn't that way in college and I won't compromise my ideals to be that way in the National Football League. I do my job and I do it well, but I also know that there's other things that I can do well that I'll get to eventually."

NFL | Alexander and Barber to set league record Week 3
Fri, 22 Sep 2006 22:53:28 -0700

Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Seattle Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander and New York Giants RB Tiki Barber will break an NFL record when they play against each other Week 3. With Alexander's 1,880 rushing yards and Barber's 1,860 rushing yards in 2005, they will set the record for most combined rushing yards from the previous season in one game. With 3,740 combined rushing yards, they beat out the record held by former Detroit Lions RB Barry Sanders and former Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jerome Bettis. Sanders and Bettis played on the same field in a Thanksgiving game in 1998 with a combined 3,718 rushing yards.

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets RB Curtis Martin (knee) has been suffering from a nagging knee injury throughout this season and stated that this year has been one of the most challenging of his career. "It's been very tough," Martin said. "This has been one of my more challenging years if not my most challenging year physically." This year, Martin is just 265 yards shy of setting the NFL record for most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, breaking a tie with former Detroit Lions RB Barry Sanders. "I've never been a goal guy [but] this is one I think would be special," Martin said. "I have to understand that this would be special, not for myself but just for everyone who's a part of it."

Colts | James Rushing Toward Elite Company
Sat, 04 Dec 2004 10:06:37 -0800

Phil Richards, of the Indianapolis Star, reports Indianapolis Colts RB Edgerrin James has rushed for 7,358 yards in his career and is on pace to finish this season with a total 7,897 yards. If James reaches that mark, he will have accumulated more rushing yards in six seasons than all but RBs Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith. "As long as I'm out there, I'm striving to be the best," James said. "I'm trying to be one of the best players ever to play the game. That's the only reason I play the game, to put my mark on it."

Cardinals | Special Game-Planning for Falcons’ Vick
Fri, 24 Sep 2004 09:57:47 -0700

AZCardinals.com reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green said his defense will pay extra attention to the opposing quarterback in the Week 3 match up against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, Sept. 26. "You had Barry Sanders rules which meant certain things when you were going against Barry Sanders and now you have Michael Vick rules," Green said. "Those rules apply to only Michael Vick and if you don't, he'll put up big numbers on you." The Cardinals realize the tough task of limiting Vick. "When he pulls the ball down to run, we need to have everyone getting to him," said DE Kyle Vanden Bosch. "One of our weaknesses has been missed tackles and he'll make the first guy miss so we've all got to get to the ball."
