Packers | Gave Martin A Thought

Thu, 03 Jan 2002 20:33:47 -0800

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers gave some thought to signing WR Tony Martin, after he was released by the Atlanta Falcons earlier this week. Director of pro personnel Reggie McKenzie said Martin remained a deep threat at age 36, but the Packers would want a more complete receiver to make it worth releasing one of their players. The Packers will stick with WRs Antonio Freeman, Bill Schroeder, Corey Bradford, Donald Driver, Charles Lee and Robert Ferguson for the playoffs.

As a followup to earlier reports, AtlantaFalcons.com reports Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Reeves said he feels WRs Shawn Jefferson and Brian Finneran are both playing better than Tony Martin was, which is one of the reasons Martin was released. It also gives the team a chance to add Shawn Mills to the active roster, which they did earlier today. Reeves said they do not have any plans for Martin next year. Jefferson will replace Martin in the starting lineup this weekend but Finneran will continue to see plenty of playing time, too. The team will also try to get WR Quentin McCord more involved during the game.
