Red Sox | David Ortiz to return later this week

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 10:28:17 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz is expected to return to action in a minor league game Thursday, March 26, after dealing with dehydration caused from the flu that has left him with "overall soreness," according to manager John Farrell. Ortiz hasn't played since last Monday. The Red Sox are unconcerned with his status, as he has missed plenty of spring action in past years and been fine.

Fantasy Tip: Despite his age (39), Big Papi still remains relevant in fantasy baseball leagues. He's hit at least 30 home runs in back-to-back seasons for the Red Sox, and he's in one of baseball's most potent lineups yet again in 2015. His lack of positional eligibility hurts him, but he could easily present value in the middle rounds of your draft.

Red Sox | David Ortiz off this weekend

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 07:21:25 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (rest) will not play in spring games this weekend due to general soreness. His achy Achilles' isn't contributing to the decision.

Fantasy Tip: Ortiz ($5,600; 11.2% of your cap) is still a viable 1B option on FantasyScore, but he may need days off more frequently at 39.

Red Sox | David Ortiz out with dehydration

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 07:03:51 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (dehydration) will take a couple of days off, beginning Wednesday, March 18, due to dehydration.

Fantasy Tip: Ortiz remains a potent bat to target in the first half of your draft. He will clog up your utility spot, but it'll be hard to find better power numbers for them. Ortiz will be eligible at first base on FantasyScore's daily game.

Red Sox | David Ortiz to open year at 1B?

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 15:42:32 -0800

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz opens the year in Philadelphia, a National League city, eliminating the designated hitter from their lineup. When asked whether he'd have any reservations about using Ortiz in the field the first three games in Philadelphia, manager John Farrell answered, "none at all." Ortiz has hit .220 in 127 at-bats since 2007 in games in which he's played first base.

Fantasy Tip: Ortiz remains a solid source of power, batting average and run production even at his advanced age. Farrell's willingness to use him in the field makes Ortiz an option in FantasyScore games if he opens with a favorable pitching matchup at homer-friendly Citizens Bank Park.

Red Sox | David Ortiz in Beantown for good?

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 22:03:54 -0800

Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Tuesday, Feb. 24, that DH David Ortiz "knows he's going to be a Red Sox (player) as long as he wants to be a Red Sox (player.)" He is set to turn 40 in November, and only three players in franchise history have played in as many of 100 games past the age of 40.

Fantasy Tip: D.O. smacked a team-high 35 homers last season, so he clearly still has plenty left in the tank. Unfortunately for fantasy owners he is limited to just designated hitter which hurts his appeal somewhat.

Red Sox | David Ortiz's contract not discussed

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 15:44:19 -0800

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz can remain in Boston for as long as he wants to, according to general manager Ben Cherington. Ortiz will turn 40 this year, and only 10 position players have played past their 40th birthday in Red Sox history. Ortiz hinted last year that the 2015 season may be his last. However, Cherington said there have been no talks regarding that recently. This is the last guaranteed year of Ortiz's contract, and he'll be paid $16 million. His $11 million contract will vest for 2016 if he reaches 425 plate appearances this year. Ortiz can make more next year for more plate appearances.

Fantasy Tip: Because of his age and restrictive position qualifications, Ortiz often falls far in fantasy baseball drafts. But remember, he still managed to hit 35 home runs last year and has hit 20 homers in 13 straight seasons. There remains a point at which Ortiz becomes a bargain for his consistent power.

Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez expected to bat cleanup

Sat, 10 Jan 2015 10:49:34 -0800

In a radio interview with WEEI, Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said he is leaning towards having OF Hanley Ramirez bat cleanup behind DH David Ortiz, with 3B Pablo Sandoval batting fifth and 1B Mike Napoli batting sixth. "The one thing that clearly stands out is we have balance left- and right-handed," Farrell said. "I have always liked David in the No. 3 hole. You know he is going to come up in the first inning. I think Hanley gives David some protection behind him. Then you start to create some protection, and we want to keep Sandoval on the left side of the plate as much as possible - so if you sandwich him in between Ramirez and Napoli, you start to have a formidable middle of the order where you're going left-right-left-right all the way through there."

Red Sox | Making push for Pablo Sandoval

Tue, 11 Nov 2014 18:16:36 -0800

Free-agent 3B Pablo Sandoval (Giants) is being targeted by the Boston Red Sox, who are reportedly "all in", according to another major league club executive Tuesday, Nov. 11. The team is making a big push to sign him, and is viewed as an ideal fit at third base and because they need a left-handed bat. He could ultimately succeed DH David Ortiz as the team's designated hitter, too. "He's more of an American League player," the executive said. "And he can really hit."

Red Sox | Mike Napoli, David Ortiz to heal

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 11:14:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli (toe, finger) isn't expected to have surgery on his toe or finger this offseason. DH David Ortiz (wrist) will receive treatment on his left wrist now that the season is over.
