Tue, 14 May 2013 20:24:48 -0700 Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell confirmed Tuesday, May 14, that DH David Ortiz (oblique) is dealing with a sore oblique muscle. Fantasy Tip: Ortiz belted a three-run home run in four at-bats Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, and is hitting .329, so it appears safe to keep starting him in all fantasy leagues despite the discomfort.
Tue, 14 May 2013 17:15:42 -0700 Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (oblique) said a sore left oblique muscle was responsible for his recent slump. "I've been dealing with a sore left side," Ortiz said. "For that reason I was pulling the ball rather than hitting it the opposite way." He had one hit in his last 20 at-bats entering Tuesday, May 14. Fantasy Tip: There's no doubting that Ortiz can still swing the stick at age 37, but he's pretty fragile these days, and he's looked very ginger while running the bases at times. It could only be a matter of time before another ailment, or a recurrance of his Achilles' problems, lands him back on the disabled list.
Mon, 06 May 2013 11:51:16 -0700 Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz is hitting .440 this season and has an extra-base hit in 11 of his last 12 games. He currently has a 25-game hitting streak dating back to last season. Fantasy Tip: While Big Papi has moved around very gingerly on the base paths so far, there clearly is nothing wrong with his bat. Being limited to the designated hitter role should keep him as healthy as possible, but he remains an injury risk over a full season.
Wed, 24 Apr 2013 20:19:03 -0700 Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (Achilles') admitted that the right Achilles' tendinopathy which delayed the start of his season isn't quite 100 percent, but he hasn't been careful when running. He doubled off the green monster at Fenway Park Wednesday, April 24, against the Oakland Athletics, and then slid feet-first into second base. "I'm not really concerned with getting injured again, but there's still some concern, because I'm not 100 percent yet," Ortiz said. Fantasy Tip: Ortiz has a 16-game hitting streak dating back to last season, and he looks healthy, even if he isn't feeling 100 percent. Still, he should be activated in all fantasy leagues going forward, although his limited eligibility as just a designated hitter or utility hitter does limit his usefulness somewhat.
Wed, 24 Apr 2013 11:08:54 -0700 Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz wasn't in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 23. It was a routine day off. Plus, Boston was experiencing wet, cold weather. They have planned on resting him periodically to conserve his Achilles' health. Fantasy Tip: Ortiz carriers in weekly-lineup formats should keep this in mind, but he's still a sound play from your utility spot. Daily managers will have more leeway in adjusting to his revised schedule. This is also a sound way to keep the streaking Daniel Nava in the lineup for the long term.
Sun, 21 Apr 2013 18:30:19 -0700 Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (heels) said Sunday, April 21, that he isn't quite 100 percent. "I don't feel the way I'd like to feel," Ortiz said. "I'm just getting to the point where you have to mentally just deal with the issues I had last year and just get to the point where I'm 100 percent. I'm not trying to do too much. I wasn't facing pitching for eight months and I'm not going to lie to you, I don't feel comfortable."
Sun, 21 Apr 2013 08:38:14 -0700 Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said DH David Ortiz (heels) probably will not play in both games of a doubleheader Sunday, April 21, but will check on his condition after the first game.
Sat, 20 Apr 2013 19:13:54 -0700 Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (heel) gave an emotion speech to the crowd at Fenway Park Saturday, April 20, as baseball returned five days after the bombings at the Boston Marathon shook the city, state and country. "This is our (expletive) city, and nobody is going to dictate our freedom. Stay strong!," Ortiz said. He then went 2-for-4 with his first RBI in his season debut. Fantasy Tip: Ortiz had played just once since July 17, 2012, and not at all this season. He was rusty during his minor-league rehab, and has traditionally been a slow starter, but he looked good at the dish Saturday. If you've been waiting on him for fantasy purposes, it appears safe to plug him back into the active lineup.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 11:54:33 -0700 The Boston Red Sox officially activated DH David Ortiz (heels, Achilles') from the 15-day disabled list Friday, April 19, and optioned OF Jackie Bradley to the minors in a corresponding move. Fantasy Tip: This move has been expected since early this week, so it should come as no surprise. Get Ortiz in your lineups. Bradley should probably be cut in mixed leagues unless you have the room to wait on him possibly being called up later this season.
Thu, 18 Apr 2013 14:45:53 -0700 Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (heels, Achilles') hit a home run with Triple-A Pawtucket Thursday, April 18, and declared himself ready to return to the big leagues. "I think so," said Ortiz, who began the season on the disabled list because of soreness in both heels. "I'm old enough to know what I need to do to keep (his swing) compact, My main key was to make sure my foot was fine and keep moving." Ortiz may need periodic days for rest initially upon his return, though. Ortiz went 4-for-20 with two strikeouts and no walks on his rehab assignment. Fantasy Tip: Ortiz reached the number of rehab at-bats for him to feel comfortable facing major league pitching again. The most important thing is that his heels felt fine. You'll have to continue to check if he's in Boston's lineup at least initially, since John Farrell will look to keep him as fresh as possible.
