Mariners | Justin Smoak swinging a bat

Wed, 12 Jun 2013 15:25:48 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Justin Smoak (oblique) swung a bat left-handed Wednesday, June 12, and if that goes well, he's likely to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday, June 13.

Fantasy Tip: Kendrys Morales has dealt with some mild back pain, so if that remains an issue, perhaps the M's will make a swap. Otherwise, the playing time crunch will be back on the Emerald City. Raul Ibanez has provided much needed power and may be tough to sit down.

Mariners | Matchups cost two starting spots

Tue, 14 May 2013 20:04:58 -0700

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Tuesday, May 14, that the reason 2B Dustin Ackley and 1B Justin Smoak were out of the lineup against the New York Yankees was simply due to playing matchups. "It's more of a matchup thing than anything," Wedge said. "I wanted to get (OF Raul Ibanez) in there, and I wanted to get (INF Robert Andino) and (SS Brendan Ryan) in there. They both had decent numbers against CC."

Mariners | Raul Ibanez seeing time in left field

Sun, 12 May 2013 10:55:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez started in left field for the second consecutive game Saturday, May 11, against the Oakland Athletics, because manager Eric Wedge wanted him to feel more comfortable at the plate. Ibanez went 1-for-3, raising his average to .194, but OF Jason Bay is expected to play left field Sunday, May 12.

Mariners | Franklin Gutierrez out

Fri, 19 Apr 2013 16:30:07 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez (legs) is out of the lineup for the second straight day with stiffness in his legs Friday, April 19. "We're still trying to help him with his lower half," manager Eric Wedge said. "I think it's tough with his hips, where it gets a little bit out of line and that's where it affects his legs." Gutierrez could be used as a pinch hitter later in the game, though. The team may choose to part ways with OFs Raul Ibanez or Jason Bay when OF Michael Saunders (shoulder) returns from the disabled list next week instead of risking OF Endy Chavez to waivers.

Fantasy Tip: The Mariners would probably prefer to keep Chavez around just because Gutierrez has had trouble staying on the field. Saunders can play center field, too, if Chavez is placed on waivers. The bottom line is that Bay and Ibanez will lose out on playing time when Saunders returns.

Mariners | Endy Chavez leading off

Fri, 12 Apr 2013 15:29:16 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Endy Chavez is leading off Friday, April 12, with OFs Michael Saunders (shoulder) and Mike Morse (finger) out of the lineup. OF Franklin Gutierrez played his fifth straight game Thursday, April 11. OF Jason Bay is in right field and OF Raul Ibanez is starting in left.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Chavez to see pretty regular playing time because Seattle wants to keep Gutierrez fresh to avoid health problems he's had in the past. Chavez can also rotate at the other outfield positions when Bay or Ibanez need a breather. Morse is expected to be out up to a week, so plan accordingly.

Mariners | Easing Franklin Gutierrez in

Tue, 02 Apr 2013 15:50:59 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez is not in the lineup Tuesday, April 2, and manager Eric Wedge said they would like to ease Gutierrez into the starting job in center field. OF Michael Saunders is in the leadoff spot against a right-handed pitcher. OF Raul Ibanez is in left field and OF Mike Morse is starting in right.

Fantasy Tip: If you're skeptical about Gutierrez, we don't blame you. He just hasn't proven he can stay healthy over a full season, and his skills won't really help you unless he's playing consistently. Let this play out and see if he can earn consistent starts before considering adding him in very deep mixed leagues.

Mariners | Mike Morse glad to be back

Fri, 15 Feb 2013 17:57:49 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Mike Morse arrived to camp Thursday, Feb. 14, and got in some early hitting. He will be on the field Saturday, Feb. 16, for the first full-squad workout. "It's pretty cool being back here," Morse said. "It was funny yesterday in the cage, me and (OF Raul Ibanez) were hitting and I told him, 'Man, I feel like you and me are early right now to camp and we're still waiting on (3B Adrian Beltre, 1B Richie Sexson and 2B Jose Lopez) to get here.'"

Mariners | Two to compete for time in OF

Wed, 23 Jan 2013 22:00:19 -0800

Seattle Mariners OFs Jason Bay and Raul Ibanez will compete for time in the outfield. Ibanez has also been told to bring a first baseman's glove to camp. "I have a clear idea of how I see it playing out, but they'll ultimately determine that. Players make decisions for you," manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Mariners | Jason Bay, Casper Wells could be odd-men out

Tue, 22 Jan 2013 12:53:01 -0800

Seattle Mariners OFs Jason Bay and Casper Wells could be the odd-men out of the outfield picture this year with OFs Mike Morse, Michael Saunders and Raul Ibanez seeing most of the playing time. Ibanez could platoon with either Bay or Wells. OF Franklin Gutierrez, who hasn't been able to stay healthy in recent years, could also factor into the decision.
