Royals | Raul Ibanez signs, Christian Colon called up

Mon, 30 Jun 2014 10:38:18 -0700

The Kansas City Royals signed free-agent OF Raul Ibanez (Angels) to an undisclosed major league deal Monday, June 30, and also recalled 2B Christian Colon from Triple-A Omaha. In corresponding moves, the team designated INF Pedro Ciriaco and OF Justin Maxwell for assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Ibanez figures to be a left-handed option for designated hitter duties and off the bench. Colon will be making his major league debut. He doesn't have much power but makes solid contact; he was hitting close to .300 with Omaha before his call-up. Both players should only be considered in AL-only leagues.

Angels | C.J. Cron losing PT

Wed, 18 Jun 2014 16:04:43 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF C.J. Cron has continued to lose playing time to OF Raul Ibanez. Ibanez has started three straight games against righties, even though he has a slash line of .153/.257/.258 on the season. Manager Mike Scioscia said Ibanez has had some good at-bats recently and is starting to hit his stride. Cron has three hits and seven strikeouts in his last 20 at-bats and hasn't started since last Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Cron's lack of consistent playing time is frustrating and demonstrates that he should only be owned in AL-only leagues. He'll continue to see at-bats against lefties, but getting Ibanez going appears to be Scioscia's motive right now.

Fantasy Tip: Return Aybar to your lineups immediately.

Fri, 13 Jun 2014 14:36:43 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OFs Raul Ibanez and C.J. Cron are unlikely to start this weekend, according to manager Mike Scioscia. The Angels are playing in Atlanta and there is no option to have a designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure Ibanez and Cron aren't in your AL-only lineups this weekend.

Angels | Raul Ibanez likely to stick around

Tue, 20 May 2014 12:03:05 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim general manager Jerry Dipoto indicated that DH Raul Ibanez is likely to stick around on the roster because they like his veteran presence and expect him to turn things around after a slow start. OF Kole Calhoun (ankle) and 3B David Freese (finger) are expected to return from the disabled list this week, and next week, OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) and 3B Ian Stewart (hand) could return.

Angels | Raul Ibanez's spot not in jeopardy

Mon, 19 May 2014 19:25:05 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim general manager Jerry Dipoto said Monday, May 19, that the roster spot of DH Raul Ibanez is not in jeopardy. The team has plenty of roster decisions to make in the coming days, but Dipoto said the team will be patient with Ibanez because he turned things around after a slow start last season, and they also like his veteran presence.

Angels | No backup in RF?

Wed, 07 May 2014 11:36:44 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim don't have a true backup in right field to OF Collin Cowgill, but manager Mike Scioscia said OF Raul Ibanez could fill in if Cowgill were injured. 3B Ian Stewart also has a little experience in the outfield.

Angels | C.J. Cron to split time between 1B and DH

Sun, 04 May 2014 10:19:17 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B C.J. Cron is expected to share time at the designated hitter position with OF Raul Ibanez. He will also spell 1B Albert Pujols at first base.

Fantasy Tip: This news doesn't bode well for the soon-to-be 42-year-old Ibanez, who was hitting only .149 (13-for-87) entering play Sunday, May 4, and had seen some playing time at first base for the first time since 2010 prior to Cron being called up.

Angels | Grant Green expected to be called up

Thu, 01 May 2014 16:36:30 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Grant Green is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake Friday, May 2, according to a source. Green is expected to see a fair amount of playing time. He was hitting for a slash line of .365/.412/.529 through 25 games in the Pacific Coast League, and he had started each of his last six games in left field. Green could take at-bats away from OFs J.B. Shuck and Raul Ibanez.

Fantasy Tip: Green's positional eligibility makes him very attractive in AL-only leagues if he's receiving semi-regular playing time with the Halos. Green hasn't ever had consistent enough PT to transfer his minor league success to the bigs. He has some pop and speed, but he doesn't walk much, so don't expect much out of his BA.
