John Fay, of The Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the Cincinnati Reds' competition at first base between 1B Joey Votto and 1B Scott Hatteberg depends on how Votto can settle in at the major league level. "It's sort of synonymous with the way the Brewers when they had young [Prince Fielder] and [Lyle Overbay]," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "You know Votto's going to have more power and productivity, but, right now, Hatteberg is a better hitter."

John Fay, of The Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto may have the inside edge in beating 1B Scott Hatteberg for the starting first base position in spring training. "What's Hatteberg? Thirty-eight?" Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Votto's the future here. I talked to Hatteberg about Votto. He thinks he's going to be a heck of a player. He's not conceding his position. I think he understands to be part of the club that Votto might have to be a major part of it. It might be Votto's time."

Cincinnati Reds 1B Scott Hatteberg (oblique) has been prevented from taking batting practice, due to a strained oblique muscle, but he will test it again, Tuesday, Sept. 25, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. If it is still bothering him at that point, he may be shut down for the season.
