Jon Heyman, of SI.com, reports New York Yankees CL Mariano Rivera is upset with the way the Yankees have handled former OF Bernie Williams this offseason and believes he should be in spring training with the club. "Bernie should be here with his bat,'' said Rivera. "He had a great year last year, and he helped us a lot. I guess that's the business side of baseball.'' Responding to a question Tuesday, Feb. 13, about his reaction to Williams not receiving a guaranteed contract, Rivera replied, "Surprised? Yes ... I think Bernie shouldn't be treated that way. But who am I to say?'' Like Williams last season, Rivera is entering the final year of his contract with the Yankees and has not had any talks of an extension despite expressing interest to stay on past this season.

With 1B Jason Giambi hitting at designated hitter most nights, Williams is finding it hard to get at-bats. Yankees manager Joe Torre said he would continue to try to find Williams playing time and it will most likely come when Damon is used as a designated hitter and Williams would then cover center field. He would also try to get him in as a designated hitter as often as possible.
