Yankees | Curtis Granderson in cleanup spot, LF

Tue, 14 May 2013 13:19:33 -0700

New York Yankees OF Curtis Granderson (forearm) is making his season debut batting cleanup and starting in left field Tuesday, May 14. The team has decided that they are better defensively with OF Brett Gardner in center field. OFs Vernon Wells and Ichiro Suzuki are both expected to continue seeing playing time with Granderson back. Wells is the designated hitter Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: The biggest loser in this scenario is probably Travis Hafner. His limited positional eligibility also hurts his value in deep mixed leagues, too. Wells and Suzuki won't play as much as they were, but they should continue to see enough at-bats to remain valuable in cavernous mixed leagues.

Yankees | Curtis Granderson close to returning

Mon, 13 May 2013 16:36:56 -0700

New York Yankees OF Curtis Granderson (forearm) has had at least one hit in four of his previous rehab games, including three hits Sunday, May 12, and he's batting .412 with a home run for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He could come off the disabled list Tuesday, May 14, barring any setbacks. "I've always said, 'when Grandy feels that he's ready, then come on,' said manager Joe Girardi. "We want him back in our lineup and if he feels that he's ready to go, he's ready to go. Whenever the conversation takes place, we're open arms."

Fantasy Tip: All signs point to Granderson returning tomorrow after the club optioned Brennan Boesch to the minors. It's unclear which outfield position Granderson will play, but all that matters is that he'll be in the lineup on a regular basis. Finding PT for Vernon Wells might be tougher, and he may be involved in an outfield platoon with Ichiro Suzuki, which will limit both players' value in mixed universes.

Yankees | Curtis Granderson homers during rehab

Thu, 09 May 2013 10:32:25 -0700

New York Yankees OF Curtis Granderson (forearm) homered to center field during his rehab game Wednesday, May 8, and he played two innings in center field and then moved to right field for two more innings and then moved to left field after that. Granderson will move to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Thursday, May 9, although he may not play. Granderson will continue to play all three outfield positions.

Fantasy Tip: The fact that the Yanks have Granderson playing all three outfield positions during his rehab suggests that they still aren't sure where he will play when he returns to New York. The Yankees would probably like to keep Vernon Wells' bat in the lineup as much as possible, so this situation could be very fluid.

Yankees | Curtis Granderson to begin rehab assignment

Wed, 08 May 2013 16:42:06 -0700

New York Yankees OF Curtis Granderson (forearm) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday, May 9.

Fantasy Tip: Granderson is on the cusp of returning to a Yankees lineup that is in need of the kind of pop that his left-handed stick can bring. Brennan Boesch and Ben Francisco will essentially become bench players, if one of them isn't cut from the roster. Vernon Wells could also lose some value if he enters into a platoon with Ichiro Suzuki or with Travis Hafner at designated hitter.

Yankees | Vernon Wells to start in LF

Mon, 25 Mar 2013 10:11:47 -0700

The New York Yankees plan to have Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Vernon Wells be their starting left fielder to begin the season after a trade is finalized Monday, March 25. The two sides are deciding which minor league players the Angels will receive in the trade before it becomes official. Wells will become the fourth outfielder when OF Curtis Granderson (arm) returns. Wells could split time at designated hitter with DH Travis Hafner, too.

Fantasy Tip: This tempers the excitement for Ben Francisco and Brennan Boesch in AL-only leagues. Wells is the better target now as short-term outfield depth.
