The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo reports former pinch-hitting extraordinaire Mark Sweeney has been an extra coach on Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre's staff helping out with scouting and game preparation. He has been huge in helping 1B Jim Thome adapt to his pinch-hitting role.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre is allowing IF Nomar Garciaparra to manage the team Sunday, Sept. 28, against the San Francisco Giants, with 1B Mark Sweeney serving as bench coach, according to The Associated Press. Torre had allowed players to control the season finale in the past with the New York Yankees, and they will be responsible for creating the lineup and making mound visits.

However, manager Joe Torre is not sure if he will activate Sweeney Saturday, July 19, which is the first day he is eligible to come off of the disabled list.
