According to The New York Daily News, New York Yankees general manager called free-agent OF Shane Spencer's agent Thursday, Aug. 12 to see if Spencer would be interested in providing some outfield insurance for the Yankees by playing at Triple-A Columbus. Spencer was released by the Mets last month following a DUI arrest.

Updating an ongoing story, The New York Times's Lee Jenkins reports New York Mets OF Shane Spencer, who was arrested for driving under the influence Tuesday, July 27, will not play for the Mets again. Already suspended without pay, Spencer was designated for assignment July 31. Mets general manager Jim Duquette is trying to trade Spencer, but if he cannot complete a deal in 10 days he will put him on waivers.

The Associated Press reports New York Mets OF Shane Spencer (foot) was suspended without pay by the Mets Wednesday, July 28, one day after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence. It's unknown what the Mets plan to do with Spencer when he returns from the disabled list. "We haven't made a final determination yet on that about his future," Mets GM Jim Duquette said. "We're still talking those details through."

The Associated Press reports New York Mets OF Shane Spencer was charged with driving under the influence early Tuesday morning, July 27, after being stopped by the Florida Highway Patrol. Spencer was clocked going 96 mph in a 70 mph speed zone on I-95 in St. Lucie County, Florida, according to the police. Spencer refused to take a breathalyzer test but otherwise cooperated with authorities. Nonetheless, he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor DUI. Spencer (foot) had been spending time in Port St. Lucie after going on the 15-day disabled list.
