The Tampa Bay Rays are interested in signing free-agent OF Gary Sheffield (Mets), according to the St. Petersburg Times' Marc Topkin. "I had a meeting with the Rays, and they're going to get back to me, and it's out there now that they're talking to me and hopefully something comes about," Sheffield said.

Free-agent OF Gary Sheffield (Mets) has not ruled out a return to baseball, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck. "(Teams) know who I am," Sheffield said. "The thing is that hitting has never been my problem. I can still do that. I can still go out and hit 20-30 home runs." He has been working out five times a week and feels he could still play.

The Detroit Tigers owe $11 million in deferred money to players during the 2011 season. Free-agent OF Gary Sheffield (between $1 million and $2.5 million from 2010-2019), Washington Nationals C Ivan Rodriguez ($2.7 million in 2011), OF Magglio Ordonez ($3 million in 2011 and 2012), San Francisco Giants SS Edgar Renteria (around $3 million in 2011) and CL Jose Valverde ($1 million) all receive deferred payments next year, the Detroit Free Press reports.

George A. King III, of the New York Post, reports free-agent OF Gary Sheffield (Mets) is still undecided if he wants to return for the 2010 season. "There are things on the table that I have to accept or not accept," Sheffield said. "Right now I have not made up my mind." The New York Mets have not contacted him. Sheffield said that his body is in shape and ready for the rigors of another season. "I am in tip-top shape," Sheffield said. "I am healthy and I have been working to get back to where I need to be. I am feeling great and I lost 15 pounds, down to 212."
