Sun, 22 Nov 2009 12:53:41 -0500 Free-agent OF Gary Sheffield (Mets) has not yet heard from any teams, but said he wants to keep playing, according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe. In order to stay in shape, he has hired a nutritionist and is undergoing a grueling workout regimen which includes mixed martial arts and boxing exercises. "I've never worked so hard in the offseason as I have this one," Sheffield said. "I'm 100 percent dedicated to my training. When people tell me I can't do something, I prove them wrong. Just like people thought I couldn't play the outfield last year. I showed them I could. My shoulder came back last year so I can make the throws from the outfield. I feel I still have value." Sheffield said he would be willing to serve as a designated hitter, but would also like to play in the field several times a week. He has 2,689 career hits, and said his family wants him to keep playing until he reaches the 3,000 hit mark.
