St. Louis Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr. said the team made every effort to try to re-sign 1B Albert Pujols this winter, but he eventually signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. DeWitt said the team made a substantial offer to Pujols. "You do get to a certain point financially where you get to certain limits, where it can be hard to manage. But having said that, we hoped he would take our offer and come back. And it was a very strong offer, as you all know, but one that we felt we could still compete with over a long time. And that's the bottom line," DeWitt said.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Albert Pujols' 10-year, $250 million deal is backloaded, which allows the team to pay him significantly less in the first two years of the contract. He will make $12 million next year and $16 million in 2013, and then his salary will increase until it passes $30 million annually near the end of the deal. Pujols can make a total of $265 million if he reaches award and milestone bonuses.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Bobby Abreu wouldn't mind being traded this offseason, according to sources with knowledge of his thinking. "Right now, (Abreu) is a valuable asset," general manager Jerry Dipoto said. "I have a world of respect for Bobby. I want to make sure he's in a position to be productive. Right now, we have that ability." However, Abreu wants to play everyday, and with the acquisition of 1B Albert Pujols, that could be tough to accommodate. The outfield is full with OFs Vernon Wells, Peter Bourjos and Torii Hunter, and 1B Kendrys Morales figures to serve as the designated hitter.
