Pujols was previously honored with the Players Choice Award for NL Outstanding Player and Sporting News selected him as its Player of the Year. Both honors were based on votes of players. Pujols will receive $50,000 for the Player of the Year award and $20,000 from the NL Outstanding Player award to be given to a charity of his choice.

Cardinals physician George Paletta operated on Pujols' right elbow to relieve compression and irritation of the ulnar nerve that has caused numbness, tingling in his ring finger and pinkie, weakness in his grip and pain along the inside of the forearm. A follow-up MRI on Pujols' elbow after the season showed no change in the ligament and indicated that the nerve was the source of his complaints, Paletta said. Studies were sent to specialist Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, who concurred with Paletta's diagnosis. "My opinion is we've managed this thing quite successfully," Paletta said. "I'm still optimistic that we can manage this thing without surgery for the remainder of his career."

If Pujols, 28, underwent surgery in the fall of '09, he would return no later than two months into the 2010 season. That would give him four months to persuade the Cardinals to exercise his option, and the entire '11 season to prove that he is fully healthy before potentially going out on the open market at age 31.
