The St. Louis Cardinals hired former OF John Mabry as assistant hitting coach Friday, Dec. 2. Mabry is reportedly the best friend of new manager Mike Matheny.

The Denver Post reports Colorado Rockies IF/OF John Mabry started at third base on May 16 in place of 3B Garrett Atkins. Atkins entered the game just 3-for-23 (.130) against Diamondbacks SP Brandon Webb, while Mabry was 7-for-13 with one homer and four RBI against him.

Updating an earlier post, the Associated Press reports the Colorado Rockies and OF John Mabry agreed to terms on a minor-league contract. No financial terms were announced for the minor-league portion of the deal, but Mabry will be paid $750,000 if he makes the 40-man roster.

Updating previous items, Rockies.MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports the Colorado Rockies remain interested in free agent IF John Mabry (Cubs) and have been involved in recent "active discussions" with him, according to Mabry's agent. The 36-year-old Mabry is a career .398 hitter at Coors Field in 123 at-bats.

Renck, of the Denver Post, reports the Colorado Rockies are still looking for a left-handed bat to come off the bench, and they have discussed pursuing free-agent outfielders Todd Hollandsworth (Reds) or John Mabry (Cubs). OF Alexis Gomez, who recently signed a contract with the club, could also fill that role.

The Denver Post's Troy E. Renck reports Colorado Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd has agreed in principle on a contract with what he terms a "reserve hitter". O'Dowd would not identify terms of the deal or the name of the player, but speculation is centering around 1B Darin Erstad or OF John Mabry.
