The St. Louis Cardinals named John Mabry as their new hitting coach Monday, Nov. 5. He was promoted from his position as the assistant hitting coach with Mark McGwire expected to be named the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Blaine Ilsley was also named the bullpen coach, replacing Dyar Miller.

St. Louis Cardinals third-base coach Jose Oquendo missed the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday, June 29, because of illness. Regular first-base coach Chris Maloney filled in at third, with John Mabry coaching first.

The Denver Post reports Colorado Rockies IF/OF John Mabry started at third base on May 16 in place of 3B Garrett Atkins. Atkins entered the game just 3-for-23 (.130) against Diamondbacks SP Brandon Webb, while Mabry was 7-for-13 with one homer and four RBI against him.

Updating an earlier post, the Associated Press reports the Colorado Rockies and OF John Mabry agreed to terms on a minor-league contract. No financial terms were announced for the minor-league portion of the deal, but Mabry will be paid $750,000 if he makes the 40-man roster.

Updating previous items, Rockies.MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports the Colorado Rockies remain interested in free agent IF John Mabry (Cubs) and have been involved in recent "active discussions" with him, according to Mabry's agent. The 36-year-old Mabry is a career .398 hitter at Coors Field in 123 at-bats.
