The Associated Press reports Seattle Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi told reporters there is no rift between the team and OF Matt Lawton. Lawton said he was fine with the current situation regarding a glut of outfielders on the team, but the situation may be reassessed later.

According to The Seattle Times, Seattle Mariners OF Jeremy Reed was out of the starting lineup for the seventh straight game on Sunday, May 7, having last started on April 30 at Baltimore. Since then, he has had just five at-bats, all in reserve roles. Reed will likely be relegated to platoon status for a while, now that OF Matt Lawton is back as a regular presence in the lineup, and OF Willie Bloomquist is likely to play somewhere as well.

Doug Miller, of Mariners.MLB.com, reports Seattle Mariners manager Mike Hargrove almost started OF Matt Lawton Saturday, April 15, at the designated hitter spot. He decided to go with OF Carl Everett instead because Everett had better career numbers against Boston Red Sox SP Tim Wakefield. Hargrove also felt it would not be fair to Lawton to have his first at-bats of the 2006 season against a knuckleball pitcher.

Steve Herrick, of Mariners.MLB.com, reports Seattle Mariners OF Matt Lawton will get some playing time in the Mariners upcoming series against the Boston Red Sox, which begins Friday, April 14. Lawton, who has yet to play in a game this year, was activated Wednesday, April 12, after serving a 10-day suspension for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy.
