Redskins | Talks Over With Ismail?

Updating previous reports, the Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins and free agent WR Raghib Ismail (Cowboys) have broken off contract talks. The two sides were unable to agree to a contract structure that would have adequately addressed the possibilities of Ismail getting hurt or deciding to retire. "Both sides worked really hard and in good faith to come up with a contract structure that fairly allocated the risks and potential rewards of the situation," said Ismail's Washington-based attorney, Lon Babby. "It wasn't the fault of the Redskins or Rocket. We just couldn't come up with a solution to the issues."

The Washington Redskins and Ismail resumed negotiations last week and were close to an agreement at one point, but Ismail still has not made a final decision about whether he intends to play next season, according to sources.

The two sides are having trouble applying the finishing touches to a contract, and it was unclear Friday night whether a deal would be completed. The sides were struggling to work out a contract structure that would adequately address the possibilities of Ismail getting hurt or retiring.

The team continued exchanging contract proposals yesterday with Ismail's Washington-based representative, Lon Babby. The two sides had the basic financial terms in place, sources said, but were trying to agree on a contract structure that would address Ismail getting hurt or retiring.

Ismail has reemerged as a candidate to serve as the team's No. 3 WR, after contacting Redskins officials recently to say he might play next season, sources close to the situation said. Redskins officials are trying to decide whether Ismail still fits into their plans even as he mulls his future.

It appears either Ismail takes a significant pay cut or the Cowboys will likely release him.

The Star Telegram reports there are people other than Dallas Cowboys head coach Dave Campo on the hot seat. Some players could be in their final season with the Cowboys as a result of salary issues: FB Robert Thomas ($1 million), TE Tony McGee ($755,000), WR Raghib Ismail ($4 million), TE Jeff Robinson ($1.1 million) and CB Dwayne Goodrich ($437,000). The players aren't necessarily going to be cut, but could all be asked to restructure their contracts if they want to stay in Dallas. The Cowboys are approximately $5 million under the salary cap for 2003.

The Dallas Morning News reports Dallas Cowboys WR Raghib Ismail said he would be willing to restructure his contract to remain with the team in 2003. Ismail, who is signed through 2005, knows that he would probably have to restructure his contract to return to the Cowboys. Ismail said he wants to play football again next year. He would also consider playing for another team if things didn't work out in Dallas.

The Star-Telgram reports two weeks after having surgery, Dallas Cowboys WR Raghib Ismail (neck) is doing well. He said he won't play this season, but he won't retire either. Ismail is confident he will be able to see his career through after talking to the Cowboys doctors and trainers the past couple of days. Owner Jerry Jones wanted to talk to Ismail before ruling him out for the season. The two have spoken and Ismail will be placed on injured reserve in the next few days, Jones said.

The Star-Telegram reports Dallas Cowboys rookie WR Antonio Bryant is ready to show the league he should have drafted higher than the tenth best WR in the NFL Draft. "I expected to go higher," Bryant said Friday, the first day of a three-day mini-camp for Cowboys rookies and first-year players. While making no apologies for his edgy demeanor, Bryant said things were "blown out of proportion" by the media about a few off-field incidents. Bryant is excited to be in Dallas, maybe too much so as his excitement caused some dropped passes Friday. Bryant is expected to complement WRs Joey Galloway and Raghib Ismail as the team's No. 3 receiver, but he won't be handed the job.

According to USA Today, the Dallas Cowboys are looking to upgrade their wide receiver position. They need a big receiver to make the tough catch over the middle. While both WRs Joey Galloway and Raghib Ismail return, both are small, speedy receivers. An addition of a bigger receiver would round out their receiver corps. and could push Ismail for a starting job.

The Dallas Morning News reports Dallas Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones is reportedly considering doing away with the timing-based passing offense that helped them win three Super Bowls in the 1990s and shifting to the West Coast offense. A source said the Cowboys have talked to members of Oakland's organization twice and Seattle's once about potential assistant coaches who could help the Cowboys install the West Coast offense. Jones would not comment on the future of offensive coordinator Jack Reilly with the team. The team has the weapons in WRs Raghib Ismail and Joey Galloway and TE Jackie Harris to consider the new offense.

Mickey Spagnola reports for Dallas Cowboys.com RB Emmitt Smith is realizing he has little, if any, chance of playing Sunday against Atlanta. Judging from the swelling and stiffness in his knee, Smith is unlikely to actually practice this week. "I try to work on it, and it's not responding in the manner you think it should," Smith said. Cowboys assistant trainer Britt Brown compared Smith's sprain to that of WR Raghib Ismail, who ended up missing two starts over three weeks earlier in the year. Smith finally admitted as much Wednesday, all but saying he would not play this Sunday in Atlanta. Smith very well could be out until after Thanksgiving because of the team's schedule.

"I feel okay about it," Campo said regarding Galloway's return for this week's game. WR Reggie Swinton (hamstring) worked on a limited basis on Monday, and plans to practice Wednesday. WR Raghib Ismail (head/knee) practiced on Monday and should be fine. WR Darrin Chiaverini missed Friday's practice with an undisclosed injury but was back at work Monday and is fine.

WR Raghib Ismail appeared dazed after taking a hard hit Monday night but was back on the field for the final drive. FB Robert Thomas sprained his left ankle in the game, and the Cowboys were waiting for the results of an MRI.

He has been moved from doubtful to questionable, which means, technically, he has a 50-50 chance to return Monday. In all likelihood, the Cowboys would ease Ismail back onto the field, possibly still starting Joey Galloway and Reggie Swinton, but bringing Ismail in on nickel downs.

"Rocket had a good day today - he felt good today," head coach Dave Campo said. "We're not ready to make a definite decision. But I wouldn't rule him out to play Monday night." With the bye week following the Redskins game Monday night, the team may hold him out Monday.
