Tue, 14 May 2013 17:01:28 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Torii Hunter changed his hitting approach to become more of a line-drive hitter than a big bopper at the tail end of last season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and this year with the Tigers. Hunter is also using the entire field more than he has before, looking to drive outside pitches to the opposite field instead of trying to pull them. Hunter has a .360 batting average and .551 average on balls in play since the All-Star break last season. Fantasy Tip: This is the kind of rennaissance that soon-to-be 38-year-olds need to do to in order to avoid natural regression in their skills. Hunter has successfully changed his approach and surprised most fantasy owners with his hot start. The question is whether he can sustain these levels of success all season. The answer is probably not, but he could remain pretty darn effective if he sticks with his new approach all year.
Mon, 13 May 2013 10:45:23 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks has some experience in center field and OF Avisail Garcia can also play center, having started 44 games there last summer with Double-A Eerie. OF Torii Hunter has plenty of experience in the position, too, so the Tigers have plenty of options to play center field with OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the disabled list. OF Don Kelly started the last two games in center field over the weekend. Garcia's natural role is as a corner outfielder, though, and he hit .432 (16-for-37) with a double, a home run and four RBIs in eight games with Triple-A Toledo. Fantasy Tip: Kelly was likely a temporary solution to the problem over the weekend. Now that Jackson is out for two weeks, expect either Dirks or Hunter to man center field regularly, allowing Garcia to play a corner outfield spot. Garcia may not play every day, however, but for those speculating on increased playing time in cavernous mixed leagues, Garcia is your best bet over Kelly or Matt Tuiasosopo.
Mon, 13 May 2013 09:58:29 -0700 The Detroit Tigers placed OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring pull Monday, May 13, and recalled OF Avisail Garcia from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Jackson's DL stint will be retroactive to May 12. Fantasy Tip: Don Kelly started in center field yesterday with Jackson out, but he might have just been a one-game replacement. Although he doesn't have the range he once had, Torii Hunter could slide over to center, which would allow the Tigers to place Garcia in right field. Garcia's season is off to a slow start thanks to a heel injury, but he represents the most upside out of the group that includes Kelly and Matt Tuiasosopo. Andy Dirks should continue to see consistent playing time in left. The outfield arrangement could be very fluid, though, so deep mixed leaguers speculating on increased playing time might have to be patient.

Tue, 09 Apr 2013 15:05:15 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Torii Hunter went 3-for-5 against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday, April 9. Hunter recorded his 2,000th career hit during the game.
Sun, 07 Apr 2013 21:53:40 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Torii Hunter had two more hits Sunday, April 7, against the New York Yankees, giving him multi-hit efforts in five of his first six outings this season.
Tue, 19 Feb 2013 18:44:33 -0800 Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday, Feb. 19, that his regular starting outfield will each start the Grapefruit League spring game Saturday, Feb. 23, against the Toronto Blue Jays. That means OFs Andy Dirks will be in left field, Austin Jackson in center field and Torii Hunter in right field.
Sat, 02 Feb 2013 18:39:29 -0800 Detroit Tigers OF Torii Hunter said he felt misled by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim because they told him they did not have the money to re-sign him but then signed OF Josh Hamilton to a five-year, $125 million deal.
Wed, 16 Jan 2013 12:36:09 -0800 Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said OF Torii Hunter is expected to hit No. 2 in the batting order, in front of 3B Miguel Cabrera. Hunter hit .343 in the second spot in the lineup with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last year. OF Andy Dirks, who hit .295 in 173 at-bats in the No. 2 spot last year, is another option.
Wed, 02 Jan 2013 00:24:43 -0800 Updating a previous item, Detroit Tigers OF Torii Hunter says Los Angeles Times reporter Kevin Baxter misquoted him in a story he was writing about gay athletes in professional sports. The original article said Hunter would be uncomfortable with a gay teammate, but Hunter took to Twitter to say "I'm very disappointed in Kevin Baxter's article in which my quotes and feelings have been misrepresented. He took two completely separate quotes and made them into one quote that does not express how I feel as a Christian or a human being. I have love and respect for all human beings regardless of race, color or sexual orientation."
