"He's a veteran guy who's played all over the world and came through the organization, so we know him fairly well," Astros general manager Tim Purpura said. "He provides an option for us both as an insurance policy at Triple-A and if something happens at spring training. I don't think he changes the mix a whole lot."

General manager Jim Hendry said the Cubs planned to give Iowa left fielder David Kelton time in center over the next few days to see if he can handle the position for a possible recall. Hendry also will be working the phones to find a true center fielder on the market. Outfielder Armando Rios, recently let go by the Chicago White Sox, is also a possibility.
