Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Bobby Abreu smacked his 500th career double Wednesday, June 2, according to The Associated Press, in a 7-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. He joined Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson and Craig Biggio as the only players to reach 500 doubles, 250 homers and 350 stolen bases.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports former MLB OF Rickey Henderson has been working with Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp on sliding headfirst, in order to limit the pounding on his surgically repaired shoulders. Henderson, who is serving as a spring training instructor with the Athletics, has also been working closely with OF Rajai Davis and SS Cliff Pennington.

Alden Gonzalez, of MLB.com, reports the Oakland Athletics plan to retire former MLB OF Rickey Henderson's No. 24 jersey during pregame ceremonies Saturday, Aug. 1.

Kevin Kernan, of the New York Post, reports former MLB OF Rickey Henderson said that he would be willing to make a come back for a team that is in need of his services. "...But if a club came out and said they needed a left fielder, they needed a guy to get on base and steal a few bases, they can always ring my phone and I'll come on down and help their ball club, that's how much I love the game," Henderson said. He also stated that he would like to play for the United States in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Updating a previous item, the Associated Press' Hal Bock reports it still has not been decided if Rickey Henderson will assume the role of hitting coach for the New York Mets, although he has already been added to the coaching staff. He did not serve in the role for the game Thursday, July 12. Either Henderson or first base coach Howard Johnson will ultimately fill that role.
