Griffey initially had the idea to wear No. 42 on Jackie Robinson Day. "He asked my permission to do that, and I of course granted it. It told me a lot, however, about Ken, about how much he understood the history, how much he understood the impact of Jackie Robinson," Commissioner Bud Selig said. "I've often gotten credit for something, but really he made a phone call to me on a Sunday night at home that I'll never forget. So with Ken leading the way, it began to catch on with other players."

"Last year I felt that it was much better for me to remove myself from the team. I told (president) Chuck (Armstrong) and (chairman) Howard (Lincoln) if I felt I was going to become a distraction, then I (would) retire. One thing I didn't want to become is a distraction to the organization," said Griffey, now a special consultant to the team.

"I've come to a decision today to retire from major league baseball as an active player," Griffey said in statement released by the Mariners. "This has been on my mind recently, but it's not an easy decision to come by. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to have played major league baseball for so long and thankful for all the friendships I have made, while also being proud of my accomplishments."
