Seattle Mariners OF Ken Griffey Jr.'s relationship with manager Don Wakamatsu soured in recent weeks, and according to three major-league sources, Wakamatsu asked Griffey about retirement at least once in recent weeks, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. Griffey apparently got the impression that Wakamatsu no longer wanted him on the team.

Updating a previous report, Seattle Mariners DH Ken Griffey Jr. officially announced his retirement from baseball Wednesday, June 2, according to MLB.com's Jim Street. "I've come to a decision today to retire from major league baseball as an active player," Griffey said in statement released by the Mariners. "This has been on my mind recently, but it's not an easy decision to come by. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to have played major league baseball for so long and thankful for all the friendships I have made, while also being proud of my accomplishments."

The Seattle Mariners' new look lineup Wednesday, May 12, could be used for a while, with 3B Jose Lopez serving as the designated hitter and 3B Matt Tuiasosopo playing third base, according to The Seattle Times' Geoff Baker. DH Ken Griffey Jr., who is hitting .200, would be the odd man out of playing time. DH Mike Sweeney will serve as the designated hitter Thursday, May 13. The team might also look to see if 2B Chone Figgins' move to second base and the No. 2 spot in the order is causing him to hit .188.
