Dave Spadaro, of PhiladelphiaEagles.com, reports Philadelphia Eagles TE James Whalen basically caught everything thrown his way during offseason practices. He moved well, looked comfortable catching the football and fit very nicely into the passing camp. Whalen is expected to compete for the backup tight end spot behind TE L.J. Smith during training camp.

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals TE James Whalen (knee) suffered a knee injury on Monday, Aug. 9. Whalen was scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday, Aug. 11, to repair cartilage. He is expected to be out 2-6 weeks.

With injuries to Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (jaw) and James Whalen (hamstring), free agent TE Tony McGee is needed to fill in at tight end. McGee, who is expected to sign Tuesday, Oct. 7, was one of the final cuts of camp and was let go only because of a roster squeeze elsewhere. He will sign for the rest of the year, but Witten's injury is not too severe.

According to Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com, the Dallas Cowboys are considering carrying four tight ends on their roster: TE Dan Campbell, TE Tony McGee, TE James Whalen and TE Jason Witten. "I like to have a little difference in style (among the tight ends), and coincidentally we have that here,” head coach Bill Parcells said. “You like to have a tight end that could do certain things and another one that you could feature doing something else, and I think with the combination of McGee, Whalen, Campbell and Witten, that we're going to have some versatility at the position. I've never kept four tight ends on my team before. But I'm willing to change things."

DallasCowboys.com reports Dallas Cowboys TE James Whalen will have multiple roles on the football field this season, according to head coach Bill Parcells. "He's a hybrid," Parcells said. "It means detached from the main body. He's on the perimeter of the offense, not necessarily out wide, but he's not in the backfield and he's not a lineman and he's really not an in-line tight end. He is a different type of Richie Anderson."
