Milwaukee Brewers OF Jay Gibbons has announced he has retired from professional baseball. Gibbons has been playing in the minor leagues this season.

The Milwaukee Brewers re-signed OF Jay Gibbons Thursday, April 26, after releasing him at the end of spring training. He is being assigned to Double-A Huntsville.

The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned SS Ivan De Jesus and SP John Ely to the minors Monday, June 6, and designated OF Jay Gibbons and SS Juan Castro for assignment to make room for RP Blake Hawksworth (hip), OF Marcus Thames (quadriceps) and SS Juan Uribe (abdominal).

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Jerry Sands could be demoted to the minors when the team activates OF Marcus Thames (quadriceps) from the disabled list Monday, June 6. If Sands is not sent down, the team could release OF Jay Gibbons.

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Dodgers OFs Jerry Sands and Jay Gibbons are now part of a platoon in left field. Gibbons will start the majority of games when the team faces a right-handed pitcher and Sands will start mostly against lefties.
