Matthew Leach, of MLB.com, reports St. Louis Cardinals OF Juan Encarnacion filed for free agency Monday, Nov. 10. However, he may not be able to play again after being hit in the face by a foul ball Aug. 30 of 2007.

Tom Timmermann, of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Cardinals OF Juan Encarnacion (eye), who suffered a serious eye injury when hit with a foul ball as he waited in the on-deck circle during a game in August, will have surgery Jan. 22. He is expected to miss all of 2008, if not more.

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Cardinals OF Juan Encarnacion (eye) is expected to miss the 2008 season because of a serious eye injury he suffered last season. The Cardinals are not sure if Encarnacion will ever be able to play again.

Joe Strauss, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Cardinals OF Juan Encarnacion (eye) has only regained 20/400 vision in his left eye and the team is pessimistic about his return. Encarnacion is expected to return to St. Louis to be examined by a retinal specialist within the next two weeks.

Derrick Goold, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Cardinals OF Juan Encarnacion (eye) visited with an eye specialist in Boston Sunday, Sept. 16, and is considering treatments for his eye injury. Encarnacion has reported improving eyesight and is feeling better, but still has yet to schedule surgery to repair any possible damage to his optic nerve.

ESPN.com reports St. Louis Cardinals OF Juan Encarnacion (eye) has been released from the hospital, however, there is still no date scheduled for surgery on his fractured left eye socket. "He's still dealing with post-concussion syndrome," team trainer Barry Weinberg said. "Even though his eye is the major long-term concern, right now he's dealing with a serious concussion. ... He still has those side effects. The combination of the eye and the concussion ... is significant."
