St. Louis Cardinals OF Jim Edmonds (Achilles') formally announced his retirement from baseball Friday, Feb. 18, according to MLB.com's Matthew Leach. "After speaking with Dr. (George) Paletta (the Cardinals' team physician) and a number of doctors about the potential risk of future permanent damage, I have decided to retire," Edmonds said in a statement issued by the club. "Although I feel that I can still play and contribute, the risk of permanent injury is too much for me to chance. As much as I regret this announcement, I feel that it is for the best."

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jim Edmonds (Achilles') has informed the team he won't be reporting to spring training, FOXSportsMidwest.com's B.J. Rains reports. Edmonds had surgery in January to alleviate persistent pain in his Achilles', and it's still causing him problems. The team will release a statement Friday, Feb. 18.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said OF Jim Edmonds (foot) won't be ready for the team's first full-squad workouts Saturday, Feb. 19, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Rick Hummel. "I don't think he's really close," said La Russa. "I think Mark (hitting coach Mark McGwire) had seen him recently and he still was not walking around very briskly."

Updating previous reports, the St. Louis Cardinals and OF Jim Edmonds (foot) have not yet scheduled the physical he needs to take in order to finalize his minor league contract, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. General manager John Mozeliak called the agreement "open-ended" in order to allow Edmonds to recover from recent foot surgery. The physical could take place as early as next week.
