Free-agent OF Johnny Damon (Rays) is biding his time, as he looks for a major league deal. "I think I signed with Tampa Bay last year around this time, and the year before I signed (with Detroit) in February," said Damon. "Even if I have to go into March, I'll do that. I'm in good shape. I'm going through my workouts." Damon is 277 hits shy of 3,000 for his career.

Yankees | Russell Branyan signs

The New York Yankees signed free-agent 1B Russell Branyan (Angels) to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Wednesday, Feb. 8. The signing won't affect the team's chances of signing free-agent OFs Johnny Damon (Rays), Raul Ibanez (Phillies) or Hideki Matsui (Athletics). However, it could be hard to re-sign 3B Eric Chavez now.

The New York Yankees are still considering signing a designated hitter, with free-agent OF's Raul Ibanez (Phillies), Johnny Damon (Rays) and Hideki Matsui (Athletics) their three options, according to a major league source. OF Andruw Jones could be utilized as the DH against left-handed pitchers.
