ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports free agent OF Jeromy Burnitz (Pirates) has elected to retire at the age of 37, according to his agent. Burnitz hit 315 home runs while playing for seven different teams over his 14-year career. Burnitz had been thinking about retiring for the last several years, according to the agent, and did not receive any contract offers this offseason.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have bought out the contract of OF Jeromy Burnitz for $700,000, making him a free agent, according to Ed Eagle of Pittsburgh.Pirates.MLB.com. Burnitz had just finished the first year of a two-year contract, and would have made $6 million during the 2007 season if the Pirates had exercised their option.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Pittsburgh Pirates OF Jeromy Burnitz may not play the 2007 season if no other team, including the Pirates, picks him up on a one-year deal. "I'm prepared to go either way," he said. "The one thing I can tell you is that, when I'm done doing this, I'm not doing anything else. The Associated Press reports Pittsburgh Pirates OF Jeromy Burnitz hit two home runs Tuesday, July 25, against the Milwaukee Brewers. Burnitz hit a solo shot off Brewers SP Ben Sheets in the second inning and then hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning of Brewers SP David Bush, who relieved Sheets in the eighth inning and took the loss. Burnitz has 14 home runs so far in the 2006 season.

According to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic, an industry source in New York has confirmed the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates have had discussions about a trade that would send Pirates RP Roberto Hernandez to the Bronx. General manager Dave Littlefield's asking price was not clear, but Littlefield could ask the Yankees to absorb OF Jeromy Burnitz's contract as part of any deal.
