Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals 1B Lance Berkman (knee) had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. There was no mention about his anterior cruciate ligament in the club's release. He also had a cartilage tear shaved down. He's expected to miss eight to 10 weeks.

Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals 1B Lance Berkman (knee) had his surgery postponed to Friday, May 25, due to a doctor's scheduling conflict.

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Lance Berkman (knee) will have surgery Thursday, May 24, or Friday, May 25, in Houston. Berkman said he believes it's very possible he could also need reconstruction of his anterior cruciate ligament given the increased instability he experienced with his right knee in recent months.

Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals 1B Lance Berkman (knee) is being diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his right knee. He will undergo surgery and is expected to be out for six to eight weeks. Berkman will receive a second opinion before having surgery. He doesn't have any damage to his anterior cruciate ligament.

Fantasy Tip: This is good news for Berkman owners, as it looks as though he'll be able to return this season, assuming he doesn't have any setbacks. His age and reputation as a slower healer make it wise to expect a recovery closer to eight weeks, and possibly longer. For what it's worth, Berkman isn't as optimistic on his recovery timeline as the team is.

Matt Adams and Matt Carpenter should both be owned in NL-only leagues - and Adams in deep mixed affairs - but you may want to scale back your pursuit of them now in shallow mixed leagues, depending on your comfort level with these lefty sticks.

Updating previous reports, the early prognosis is St. Louis Cardinals 1B Lance Berkman (knee) suffered a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. He'll have an MRI Monday, May 21, to confirm it.

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Lance Berkman (knee) said Sunday, May 20, that he might consider retirement if he has a torn anterior cruciate ligament. "If I've re-torn my ACL or something like that, I'd certainly get it fixed but you don't know how psychologically you're going to come back from something like that," Berkman said.

Cardinals | Lance Berkman placed on disabled list

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed 1B Lance Berkman (knee) on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee injury. In a corresponding move, the team has purchased the contract of 1B Matt Adams from Triple-A Memphis.

Fantasy Tip: In case you forgot, Berkman, who just returned from stint of three-plus weeks on the DL for a strained left calf, wants to remind you that he's injury-prone. No word yet on the diagnosis, but the injury the first baseman suffered in Saturday night's affair versus the Los Angeles Dodgers looked like it could keep him out for more than the minimum. It could be the type of thing that requires surgery. Adams (.338/.373/.597 at Triple-A Memphis) is the club's most touted hitting prospect. The 23-year-old slugger is in the midst of his first season at the Class AAA level, and it's uncertain how much he'll play, but NL managers should scoop him up if he's available, and deep mixed players should look in his direction. Matt Carpenter, who filled in for Berkman often earlier this season, may see more time, but the Cards' outfield depth is also depleted, and if Berkman misses extensive time, Adams doesn't figure to sit.
