Updating a previous report, the New York Yankees officially agreed to sign free-agent INF Kelly Johnson (Rays) to a one-year deal in the $3 million range pending a physical. He has been signed to play either second or third base. He will play third base if 3B Alex Rodriguez opens the season suspended, and second base if 2B Robinson Cano is not brought back.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said the team's offseason plans are on hold because of 3B Alex Rodriguez's appeal hearing. The team is unsure if his 211-game suspension for next year will be upheld. Rodriguez's appeal will resume Nov. 18 in New York, and it's believed it'll last five days. When the appeal ends, the league is expected to decide within 25 days if the suspension will be upheld. "It's important that we know," Girardi said, "because if we're not going to have him, we need to fill that void. It does cause us to think a lot about, 'Do we need a third baseman or do we not need a third baseman?'"

During an interview on ESPN Radio Sunday, Oct. 13, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the team wants 3B Alex Rodriguez back and not suspended, contrary to reports that the Yankees want to rid themselves of Rodriguez and his huge contract. "If it comes down to, would we want the player we signed to be playing that position without any problems? Absolutely, no question about that," Cashman said. "I think if people think there's some sort of benefit by losing that talent, I mean, you can't replace it. It's not like, all right, well, Alex is gone. If he winds up getting suspended and it's upheld, how do you replace that? It's not easy."
