Arizona Diamondbacks 3B Geoff Blum and 1B Lyle Overbay are on the bubble when it comes to winning a bench spot this spring. INF Willie Bloomquist, SS Stephen Drew (ankle), 1B Paul Goldschmidt, 2B Aaron Hill, INF John McDonald and 3B Ryan Roberts are locks. It all depends on if Drew will be ready for opening day whether another spot will open up.

If SS Stephen Drew (ankle) is not ready for the regular season opener, the team will likely depend on SS Willie Bloomquist or SS John McDonald, both of whom handled the position in the second half of last season after Drew went down.

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said SS Stephen Drew (ankle) is progressing in his rehab, but the team isn't sure if he'll be ready for Opening Day. "He looks good," Towers said. "We've got video on him on a treadmill, which is a positive sign. We don't know, (but) (trainer) Ken (Crenshaw) seems to think he'll be ready, if not to start the season then shortly after. If not, we've got protection there, with Johnny Mac (John McDonald) and Willie (Bloomquist)."

The Arizona Diamondbacks are heavy on utility infielders heading into 2012 with IFs John McDonald, Willie Bloomquist and Geoff Blum. McDonald could start at shortstop if SS Stephen Drew (ankle) is not ready for the start of the season. Bloomquist could serve as the fourth outfielder and share time in left field with OF Gerardo Parra. Blum would likely complement 3B Ryan Roberts at third base and 1B Paul Goldschmidt at first.

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Edwin Encarnacion has found his way into the fourth option at third base behind IFs Jayson Nix, John McDonald and Mike McCoy. "We have placed a premium on the defensive side of it," manager John Farrell said. "Even by his own admission, he feels more comfortable in the DH slot. That's where we've had him since (May 23)." His primary role right now is that of a pinch hitter.
