Spencer Fordin, of MLB.com, reports the Baltimore Orioles signed free-agent SS Chris Gomez (Pirates) to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training Friday, Jan. 9, according to The Baltimore Sun. He may be used as a multi-positional reserve infielder. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Jenifer Langosch, of MLB.com, reports Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell has elected to go with SS Chris Gomez for the second straight game. Russell has tried 2B Luis Rivas and SS Brian Bixler at shortstop but they have both been inconsistent on defense. Russell has not committed to who he will use at shortstop the rest of the time until SS Jack Wilson returns. Gomez figures to get a few more starts.
