ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Washington Redskins signing of S Tony Dixon gets them two things, more depth at the safety position and insurance in case S Sean Taylor's legal troubles sideline him for a portion of the season. The two sides executed a contract shortly after Dixon auditioned for Redskins' coaches and team officials on Saturday afternoon and impressed his audience. Financial terms were not available, but it is believed that Dixon signed a one-year deal that includes a $540,000 base salary.

"He started a little slow this summer, but I'm really encouraged about what I see there," coach Bill Parcells said of Dixon. "Obviously I'm rooting for him. I'm starting to see a real understanding, a real 'OK, this is the way you do it.' And I saw three or four plays in (practice Friday, Oct. 1) that he made that last year at this time he wouldn't have made." Dixon had a breakout game last week, recording six tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and a pass deflection versus the Washington Redskins.
