The Washington Nationals are almost certain to pass on free-agent 1B Prince Fielder (Brewers) at his current price, according to a baseball source. Washington will not give him a 10-year, $240 million contract similar to what the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim gave 1B Albert Pujols. Some Nationals executives are also concerned with Fielder's weight. If Fielder doesn't lower his demands, 1B Adam LaRoche will be the starting first baseman, with OF Mark DeRosa backing him up.

Washington Nationals skipper Davey Johnson is confident that 3B/OF Mark DeRosa (wrist) is over the wrist problems that plagued him for the past two years. "I know he is healthy," Johnson said. "I had him in the World Baseball Classic. What a great guy on the ballclub. With Chris Marrero down and maybe some question marks regarding Adam LaRoche, DeRosa just fits. (DeRosa) is not only a defensive asset, but an offensive asset. We have to have a little more offense off the bench. I reached out to him and it was a great sign by Rizzo."

The Washington Nationals finalized their one-year deal with 3B/OF Mark DeRosa Wednesday, Dec. 28. He is expected to serve as the backup first baseman, and he'll play occasionally in the outfield and at second and third base. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
