Chicago White Sox general manager Rick Hahn is confident in CL Addison Reed to open up the season as the ninth-inning pitcher, but Hahn said he wants manager Robin Ventura to have flexibility to use other relievers like RP's Matt Thornton, Jesse Crain and Matt Lindstrom. "Obviously (Reed) established himself last year," Hahn said. "At the same time ... I feel that Robin should have the depth, knock on wood, and alternatives to play the best matchup."

Chicago White Sox 1B Adam Dunn entered the Tuesday, April 17, game hitting .206 (7-for-34), with nine strikeouts in his last 20 at-bats. White Sox manager Robin Ventura expressed patience in assessing Dunn's situation. "He's doing fine," Ventura said. "Again, he's going to have strikeouts, but you want him to be aggressive and go to the plate with confidence, and he's done that. Even in the work he's done in spring, what he's done here, I likes what he's doing, I like what you're going to see from him in the future."

Updating previous reports, Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura said he doesn't feel the need to name his closer. "I just do not feel the need to announce it," the first-year manager said. "It's not going to be the same guy all the time. ... It will end up being different at different times of the season." Ventura also indicated that he could play the matchups in the ninth inning.
