The Dallas Cowboys spent Monday, Aug. 25 trying to trade RB Michael Wiley, a three-year veteran, according to Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com. If the team finds no takers, Wiley will likely be released on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Matt Mosley, of the Dallas Morning News, reports the Dallas Cowboys are finalizing a contract with free agent RB Adrian Murrell, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed Wednesday, August 13. Murrell is expected to be in uniform for Wednesday's afternoon practice. Jones said the Cowboys' interest in Murrell has more to do with the injury to RB Michael Wiley (rotator cuff) than a dis-satisfaction with Cowboys RB Troy Hambrick. Murrell, who has not played in two years, weighs 222 pounds. Jones says he would have to lose 7-8 pounds.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Dallas Cowboys RB Michael Wiley (shoulder) did not practice Tuesday, August 12. According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Wiley is seeking a second opinion on a rotator cuff injury that kept him out of the Saturday, August 9 pre-season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Wiley and the Cowboys, however, appear to be differing over the severity of the injury.

There is still a chance he could play Sunday. He will be a game-time decision. Starting G Kelvin Garmon (sprained foot) encouraged the Cowboys with the work he did with the trainers Friday. He is also a game-time decision. If he can't play, rookie Matt Lehr will start at right guard. Although Char-ron Dorsey will start at right tackle this week, the team is already thinking about starting OL Aaron Gibson in the season finale against the Detroit Lions next week.

Wiley has been bothered by the injury the last two weeks. Head coach Dave Campo said he's not sure if Wiley will be able to play and Smith will be the third-down back in the meantime. If Smith works on third downs, backup RB Troy Hambrick may see a little more action at tailback so Smith can rest.

Backup Michael Wiley saw the majority of action during Thursday's practice because Smith was limited, as was RB Troy Hambrick (shoulder). Hambrick said he'd be able to play through his shoulder injury.

Head coach Dave Campo said Hambrick's bruised shoulder is a concern. Michael Wiley would be the next RB off the bench if Hambrick suffered a setback before or during the game. Jean-Jacques Taylor reports in the Sporting News several of the Dallas Cowboys younger players may be called upon to step up in 2001. FS Izell Reese will be given a chance to compete for the starting job. He filled in nicely for the last eight games last season, when he started because of George Teague's broken foot. RB Troy Hambrick will be given a chance to earn a spot as a backup RB on the team's final roster. Hambrick's chances will be tied into the Cowboys draft and free agent plans at RB. As previously reported, the team thinks RB Michael Wiley fits the role of third-down back better than full-time backup to Emmitt Smith. If the Cowboys don't re-sign free agent LB Dexter Coakley, Orantes Grant will get a chance to compete for the starting weakside linebacker job.

The team does not feel Michael Wiley is durable enough to be an every down back if Smith was injured for an extended period of time. The Cowboys will probably send 6-8 players to NFL Europe, but none which would be considered "impact players" for 2001. The team faces key decisions on LB Dexter Coakley, an unrestricted free agent whom they would like to re-sign and OT Erik Williams who may be too expensive to keep. After last year's holdout, Williams did not endear himself to owner Jerry Jones.

RB Chris Warren, who was benched last week after struggling early in the game, appears to be back out of the dog house but the team won't say how much, if any, playing time that he'll get this weekend. Rookie RB Michael Wiley impressed the team replacing Warren last week and may continue to see more playing time.
