The New York Yankees have reached out to free-agent 3B Scott Rolen (Reds) to see if he has any interest in playing for them this year to help with 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) out for the first month of the season. The Yankees' impression is that Rolen has decided not to play this year after receiving a solid offer from the Cincinnati Reds.

Updating a previous report, free-agent 3B Scott Rolen (Reds) did not announce his retirement Tuesday, Feb. 12, but he said he isn't "ready to make a commitment," and he won't be going to spring training with the Cincinnati Reds, or any other team. "I would like to leave my options open, without closing any doors. I am looking forward to all of the challenges, both personally and professionally, I will face in the future," Rolen said in a statement.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are considering whether to pursue free-agent 3B Scott Rolen (Reds), according to a person familiar with the team's plans. However, the Dodgers have yet to reach out to him to gauge his interest. Rolen prefers to play close to his home in Indiana. Rolen has yet to tell the Cincinnati Reds if he wants to return for another season. Los Angeles is unlikely to be able to promise much playing time for Rolen, though, with 3B Luis Cruz slated to open the year as the starting third baseman. Cruz hit just .173 in 19 games in winter ball this year.
