Updating an earlier item, the Associated Press' Hal Bock reports Florida Marlins minor league manager and IF Mike Mordecai was pressed into duty Tuesday, Sept. 20, and started at second base due to an injury to regular 2B Luis Castillo (hamstring). Mordecai hadn't played in the majors since 2004.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Keven Lerner reports the Florida Marlins signed SS Mike Mordecai to an undisclosed contract. Mordecai, who retired to manage the Marlins' Class A affiliate, will serve as insurance while SS Alex Gonzalez is out.

Marlins | Mordecai Enters Game as Emergency Catcher

Updating previous items, Associated Press reports Florida Marlins 3B Mike Mordecai entered the game as the emergency catcher Tuesday, June 1, due to an injury to backup C Ramon Castro (toe). Normal starting C Mike Redmond (forearm) was unavailable to play because of a bruised right forearm. Mordecai had played catcher just once before in his major league career. Mordecai collected three hits while batting but went 0-for-4 in throwing out runners trying to steal against him.

Associated Press reports Florida Marlins C Ramon Castro (toe) left the game Tuesday, June 1, due to an inflamed right big toe. He was replaced at catcher in the second inning by 3B Mike Mordecai.
