Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks is getting some extra help in spring training from former Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell. Lowell said he was invited to come by 2B Dustin Pedroia, who felt Lowell could help give Middlebrooks some tips on how the two of them used to work the double play. "Maybe something I say may trigger doing something better on his part. He's very impressive. He has the makings of being an outstanding player," Lowell said.

The Miami Marlins aren't necessarily looking for a candidate with tons of managerial experience to replace manager Ozzie Guillen. Former 3B Mike Lowell and OF Jeff Conine have been mentioned, along with Toronto Blue Jays Class A skipper Mike Redmond. The Marlins will need permission to speak with Redmond, but it isn't believed to be an issue. Miami will not consider former Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine.

Boston Red Sox 1B Mike Lowell went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored during the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees Saturday, Oct. 2, in what was probably his final major league game, according to The Associated Press. Manager Terry Francona removed Lowell from the game in favor of pinch runner Lars Anderson in the sixth and doesn't plan to use him Sunday, Oct. 3, because he wanted his career to end with a hit in his last at-bat.

He remained in the game for the rest of the inning but was replaced by Lars Anderson in the sixth. "It's sore," manager Terry Francona said. "It hit him kind of on the temple, but he didn't exhibit any signs of concussion or anything like that. We'll keep an eye on him, but I think he's going to be all right."
