The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Rob Biertempfel reports the Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent IF Terry Shumpert and assigned him to Triple-A Nashville. Shumpert was released by the Boston Red Sox at the end of March.

The AP reports 2B Terry Shumpert (elbow) of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was removed from Thursday’s game in the third inning as a precaution after being struck on his elbow by a pitch. He is considered day-to-day.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder George Lombard homered in his first at-bat with the team, becoming the fourth Devil Rays player to accomplish the feat. According to The Tampa Tribune's Scott Carter, Lombard joins outfielder Gerald Williams (2000), pitcher Esteban Yan (2000) and infielder Terry Shumpert (this season).

Scott Carter of The Tampa Tribune reports Tampa Bay Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella may give third baseman Aubrey Huff some time in the outfield, taking the place of Ben Grieve and Damian Rolls in right. When Huff is in the outfield, Piniella said second baseman Damion Easley will play third, and Marlon Anderson and Terry Shumpert will platoon at second.

The AP reports the Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed 2B Terry Shumpert to a one-year contract on Saturday. Financial terms were not disclosed. Shumpert was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.
