ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports retired 2B Bret Boone had an alcohol problem during his peak seasons with the Seattle Mariners. He told reporters during camp that he spent 26 days in a treatment facility in San Diego, and hadn't had a drink since the summer of 2007.

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports three-time All-Star 2B Bret Boone has decided to retire after a comeback attempt with the Washington Nationals. Boone, 39, hit .189 for the Nationals in 12 Grapefruit League games. He accepted an assignment to Triple-A Columbus to begin the season, but left the Clippers April 17 and returned home to his family in San Diego.

We all did -- his dad (former big league catcher and manager Bob Boone) and his brother Aaron (the third baseman in Cleveland). We sort of ganged up on him, but he said his heart wasn't in it.''

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Jim Moore reports free agent 2B Bret Boone said the reports that he rolled a cart at Wynn's $500-a-round golf course were untrue. Reports also said he was asked to remove his feet from the bar in the Country Club Grill afterward, turned belligerent and said "Make me!" prompting a call for security. He also was said to have fallen off a stool, at which time friends escorted him out before security arrived. Boone said he yelled at the bartender and made a condescending remark only because "he was very rude. Don't cross me and disrespect me to my face and in front of my friends."

Boone, who played from 1948-60 with six teams, was the first of three generations to play in the big leagues. His son Bob Boone and grandsons Bret Boone and Aaron Boone enabled the family to become the first three-generation family in major league baseball. "I have a lot on my mind, but that's no excuse. I'm just not swinging the bat well and I have to keep fighting through it," said Boone.
