MLB | Boone reveals former alcohol problem Wed, 28 May 2008 09:16:19 -0700 ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports retired 2B Bret Boone had an alcohol problem during his peak seasons with the Seattle Mariners. He told reporters during camp that he spent 26 days in a treatment facility in San Diego, and hadn't had a drink since the summer of 2007.

Boone, 39, hit .189 for the Nationals in 12 Grapefruit League games. He accepted an assignment to Triple-A Columbus to begin the season, but left the Clippers April 17 and returned home to his family in San Diego.

Boone, who played from 1948-60 with six teams, was the first of three generations to play in the big leagues. His son Bob Boone and grandsons Bret Boone and Aaron Boone enabled the family to become the first three-generation family in major league baseball.
