The Associated Press reports the New York Mets announced that first base coach Luis Alicea will not be back next year and bench coach Sandy Alomar Sr. will be offered another job within the organization. Third base coach Razor Shines and catching coach Sandy Alomar Jr. will remain with the staff but will have different roles. Hitting coach Howard Johnson, pitching coach Dan Warthen and bullpen coach Randy Niemann will be back in the same positions in 2010.

Adam Kilgore, of The Boston Globe, reports former Boston Red Sox first-base coach Luis Alicea said he was surprised over the decision to fire him this week. "He just told me they were going to make changes and I was one of the changes," said Alicea. "I've received about a hundred calls today and everyone's surprised. I'm surprised."

Updating previous reports, the Boston Herald's Sean McAdam reports Boston Red Sox first base and infield coach Luis Alicea wasn't retained likely in part to a philosophical clash he had with manager Terry Francona. The team will likely find another Spanish-speaking coach who can communicate with the team's Latino players.

The Associated Press reports Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona will manage the 2008 American League All-Star team. Members of the Red Sox staff that will join him will be Luis Alicea, John Farrell, DeMarlo Hale, Dave Magadan, Brad Mills and Gary Tuck.
