The Pittsburgh Pirates worked out free-agent 1B Dmitri Young (Nationals) Monday, Feb. 13, and he impressed manager Clint Hurdle. Young is slimmed down from his playing weight several years ago at 295 pounds. He currently has no other workouts scheduled.

Free-agent 1B Dmitri Young (Nationals) said he spoke with several teams during the winter meetings and was told by about 10 teams that they would stay in contact with him. Most of the teams willing to stay in touch were in the American League. Young likely will have to accept a minor league contract and compete for a spot in the roster.

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said he is open to bringing free-agent 1B Dmitri Young (Nationals) to spring training camp on a minor league contract. Young, who has not played in the majors since 2008, was present at the winter meetings in Dallas last week and is considering a comeback. He has lost 70 pounds and is down to 230 pounds.

Former MLB 1B Dmitri Young was arrested in Illinois for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, the Pantagraph reports. Young is a bench coach with the Oakland County Cruisers of the Frontier League.

Former MLB 1B Dmitri Young, who last played in the majors in 2008 with the Washington Nationals, has officially announced his retirement, according to Marvin Goodwin of The Oakland Press. He was recently named the new vice president and senior adviser of baseball operations for the Oakland County Cruisers of the Frontier League.
