The Kansas City Royals have signed free-agent 1B Mike Sweeney (Phillies) to a one-day contract that would allow him to retire as a member of the organization, reports The Associated Press.

Free-agent 1B Mike Sweeney (Phillies) was in Kansas City Saturday, Jan. 22, for a Royals awards ceremony, and Sweeney told MLB.com's Dick Kaegel he is debating whether to return for a 17th season. Three teams are reportedly interested in Sweeney, who has expressed he will only play for a contender. If he retires, it is expected he would join the Royals in an unnamed role.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Mike Sweeney and OF John Mayberry Jr. both hit home runs in a victory Wednesday, Sept. 29, according to The Associated Press. Sweeney now has eight homers this year. Mayberry's homer was his first this year and first since June of 2009.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ross Gload (groin) left the game early Wednesday, Aug. 11, with a right groin strain, according to The Sports Network. Gload will be re-evaluated Thursday, Aug. 12. He was replaced by 1B Mike Sweeney.
