Washington Nationals 1B Matt Stairs had a game-ending RBI Saturday, July 2, against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first game of a doubleheader. At 43, he is the oldest player to drive in a game-ending run since 3B Graig Nettles, then of the Montreal Expos, back in 1988.

Washington Nationals 1B Matt Stairs is likely to serve as the designated hitter in American League parks during interleague play against right-handed pitching, but position players might get a chance to DH, too. "I may pick a day or two to give a position a rest and let them DH, and have somebody else play their position, whether it's (OF Jayson Werth) or (2B Danny Espinosa), guys who are pretty much playing every day," manager Jim Riggleman said.

Washington Nationals OF Mike Morse is likely to see the most time at first base with 1B Adam LaRoche (shoulder) on the disabled list. However, OFs Jerry Hairston Jr. and Matt Stairs could also be options. OF Rick Ankiel (wrist), who is currently on the disabled list, will start taking ground balls at first base.

Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said Saturday, May 14, that OFs Mike Morse and Matt Stairs will see time as the designated hitter in interleague play next weekend when the team visits the Baltimore Orioles. Stairs will face right-handed pitching, and Morse will start against left-handed pitching.
