Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said the team plans to give OF Chris Carter a "full year's worth" of at-bats this season, with him alternating between first base, left field and designated hitter. "We'll mix-and-match him with Brett Wallace and Carlos Pena," Luhnow said.

Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow spoke with free-agent 1B Lance Berkman (Cardinals) this week about a return to the team, but it's unclear how serious the team is in signing Berkman. 1Bs Carlos Pena and Brett Wallace are expected to share designated hitter duties, so it's unclear how Berkman would fit into that rotation.

The Houston Astros agreed to terms with free-agent 1B Carlos Pena (Rays) on a one-year deal Monday, Dec. 17, according to sources. Pena will make $2.9 million with another $1.4 million in performance bonuses. He's expected to share first base and designated hitter duties with 3B Brett Wallace.

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays 2B Jeff Keppinger and OF Luke Scott will see most of the playing time at first base in the immediate future, leaving 1B Carlos Pena as the odd-man out. Pena is hitting .188, which is the lowest in the majors.
