Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said he will keep 1B Carlos Pena in the leadoff spot for now because Pena has been producing at that spot. Pena is 3-for-8 with one home run and three RBIs since he has taken that spot. He was in an 0-for-17 slump before being moved up in the order.

Tampa Bay Rays 1B Carlos Pena hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to beat the New York Yankees Friday, April 5, including the walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning off RP Mariano Rivera. The grand slam was Pena's eighth of his career. He entered the day 4-for-35 with two home runs in his career against Yankees SP CC Sabathia.

Tampa Bay Rays OF Luke Scott or 1B Carlos Pena are likely to hit second in the batting order to start the season. "I just think (conventional wisdom is) all based on the perception that a No. 2 hitter has to be a guy who can bunt, hit-and-run and move the runners," manager Joe Maddon said. "It doesn't happen anymore. That's not part of the game right now."

Tampa Bay Rays 1B Carlos Pena made his first start of the spring Tuesday, March 6, against the Minnesota Twins. He was hitless in two at-bats, flying out both times. "It felt really good to be out there," Pena said. "I felt pretty calm and comfortable at the plate today. I tracked the ball really well. I felt like I did exactly what I wanted to accomplish today when I was at the plate."

The Tampa Bay Rays are taking it easy with 1B Carlos Pena, and he will not play in spring games until early next week. OFs Luke Scott (shoulder) and Sam Fuld won't play until the middle of next week.
