Edgar Martinez, Barry Larkin and Fred McGriff also are new to the ballot this year. There are 26 candidates, three more than last year. Also on the ballot for the first time are Kevin Appier, Ellis Burks, Andres Galarraga, Pat Hentgen, Mike Jackson, Eric Karros, Ray Lankford, Shane Reynolds, David Segui, Robin Ventura and Todd Zeile.

Thu, 18 Jan 2007 04:38:42 -0500 The Tampa Tribune's Marc Lancaster reports former major-league baseball player Fred McGriff, who played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at one point, agreed to a one-year contract with Tampa Bay as a club special adviser. He will have a wide range of duties, from community outreach to television and radio broadcasting to on-field instruction during spring training. "They've got a young group of players over there; I'll try to help out some of the kids," McGriff said. "I don't want to be the hitting coach. Steve Henderson does a great job, and he's the hitting coach, but if different kids want some advice or whatever, you give your opinion and go on with it."
